How To Spend A Day In Downtown Bozeman

From a morning coffee shop stop to a night out at the Rialto–and all the hours in between–there’s plenty to do in Downtown Bozeman. Check out the itinerary below to help you plan your day in the heart of this Montana mountain town. Whether you’re planning to move here or just looking for things to do while you visit, this list covers all the must-do activities in the downtown area!

Where To Grab Coffee In Downtown Bozeman

Start Your Day with Coffee (or Tea)

Before you do anything else, grab a cuppa from one of Bozeman’s many coffee shops. Zocalo serves fantastic coffee with homemade syrups and whipped cream to top ‘em off. If you’re lucky enough to be around in the fall, they have one of the best pumpkin spice lattes around, made with real pumpkin.

There are several other great coffee shops to check out downtown, including Rockford, Roly-Poly, Wild Joe’s, and Treeline at the LARK. Not feeling coffee? You’re in luck: Steep Mountain Teahouse has a large assortment of teas, and even some specialty drinks!

Grab Brunch

After tending to your coffee needs, head to brunch. The Western Cafe is always busy, and for good reason: their Montana-themed decor is unmatched, and their food is fantastic and well-priced. With classics like eggs benedict and chicken fried steak and eggs, you can’t go wrong. Don’t leave without getting their famous “Bobcat” French toast, which uses a cinnamon roll as the bread.

Or, check out Cateye Cafe, and enjoy a cozy morning in their funky feline decorated space. They serve mimosas made of fun flavors (plus, they’re huge), and unique spins on classic dishes with creative names. For a seriously memorable meal, order the Kitty Cakes–pancakes shaped like a cat–and a side of the banana bread French toast.

Brigade has a great brunch in a more upscale setting. With a variety of classic drinks and creative cocktails, it’s a great spot for a celebration. Their fresh beignets are to die for, and their unique dishes–like bison short rib and bacon hash–are fun to try.

Downtown Bozeman is full of breakfast places. Other local favorites include Jam!, The Nova Café, and Main Street Overeasy.

Step Back in Time at the Gallatin History Museum

Learn all about Gallatin County’s fascinating past at the Gallatin History Museum. Located inside the old county jail house, you can actually go inside the old jail cells and lay on the bunk beds (if you dare). Check out the reconstructed log cabin, hanging gallows, legendary Big Horn Gun–plus so much more. Stop by the museum’s store on your way out, which sells numerous books on the area’s history. The museum is much bigger than it appears from the outside, so plan to spend about 1-2 hours exploring the different exhibits!

Make sure you download or print a PDF of their self-guided tour map of the downtown area. That way, you can learn about the history of the area while you walk around and shop!

Do Some Shopping

Walk off brunch by popping into the many shops lining Main Street! If you’re looking for Montana-inspired gifts, you’ll have a plethora of stores to choose from. Try Montana Gift Corral, The Montana Scene, or Montana Shirt Co. Everyone (and we mean everyone) loves Heyday, a boutique with a bit of everything.

Intrigue Ink is a unique store with handmade, screen printed items and women’s clothing, many of which have a western flair. For more women’s clothing, check out EVRGREEN Clothing, Jonah & Sage, Whiskey and Lace, or AshleyCole Boutique. And for men’s clothing, head to Meridian Men or REVOLVR. Head West has a great selection of western-themed clothing and accessories.

You’ll also find an array of bookstores and art galleries downtown. Check out Country Bookshelf for new books and other goods, and Isle of Books for a large selection of used ones. Pop into Altitude Gallery, Montana Trails Gallery, or a gallery inside the Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Bozeman without several outdoor gear stores! Check out Bozeman Running Company for all your running needs, or Bangtail Bikes for anything cycling-related. Chalet Sports and Backcountry both sell and rent a variety of clothing and gear.

Where To Go Shopping In Downtown Bozeman

Have a Quick Lunch

If you’re ready for a snack, pop into one of the coffee shops mentioned above. They all sell pastries or small bites. Wild Joe’s, for example, has a variety of sandwiches, all accompanied by your choice of aioli. You can also get a scoop of Wilcoxson’s ice cream, a local favorite, there as well. Order one of Roly-Poly’s famous kolaches (a Czech pastry), that come in sweet or savory versions. You can also stop at the Co-op, which has plenty of grab and go options. If it’s nice out, take your lunch to go for a picnic at Lindley Park!

Explore Lindley Park

Lindley Park is always a fun stop, no matter the weather. In the summer, people hang hammocks and slacklines, or walk the pathways snaking through the grass. In the winter, people use the hilly slopes to go sledding! It’s also a great place for a snowball fight, or a winter walk.

Lindley Park also serves as the entrance to the Gallagator Trail, a flat 3-mile path that winds its way past a sculpture park and several other small parks. If you have time, walk part of the trail at Peet’s Hill. After a short uphill section, you’ll get amazing views of downtown, the Bridger Mountains, and beyond.

Hit Up Happy Hour

When you’ve done enough walking around, head somewhere with a great happy hour menu! With $3 martinis, draft beers, and oysters, alongside savings on truffle fries and their popular burger, Brigade is a local happy hour favorite. Copper also has excellent prices on drinks, with $5 beer, wine, and cocktails during their happy hour. And if you’re at Copper on Sunday, happy hour lasts all day!

For more of a pub vibe, head straight to Bacchus. Their curry fries are pretty popular, and are half off during happy hour!

Where To Grab A Drink in Downtown Bozeman

Grab a Drink

After dinner, downtown is the perfect location to have a drink! Sky Shed, perched atop the Kimpton Armory Hotel, has one of the best views in town thanks to its height and many windows. Plus, there’s a fantastic patio with fire pits to relax on during the warmer months.

Bozeman Taproom is another fun spot for a beer or cocktail. With a laid back atmosphere, their rooftop is the place to be in the summer. Plonk, Brigade, and Copper are local favorites with classy atmospheres. Or, try something different at Lockhorn Cider, Bozeman’s only cider house. Their menu comprises both permanent and seasonal ciders, so there’s always something new to try!

Get a Scoop of Ice Cream

Sweet Peaks is one of the best ice cream spots in town! They have two locations, one of which (the East location) lies at the very edge of downtown. And with both classic and rotating specialty flavors, there’s almost always something new to try.

Make sure you at least sample the huckleberry flavor, as it’s made with real huckleberries (some places use blueberries instead, since they’re cheaper and taste similar). Plus, they’re usually open pretty late in the summer, so you’ll still have time to order a scoop after dinner!

Check out Bozeman’s Nightlife

For a small mountain town, Bozeman has a surprisingly busy party scene. And downtown is definitely the place to be! See what’s happening at The Ellen Theatre or the Rialto. Head to Last Best Comedy to hear local comedians cracking jokes. For a rowdier night full of dancing, check out Rocking R Bar or Bar IX.

The Molly Brown Bar, The Crystal Bar, The Cannery, and The Haufbrau are all fun dive bars to check out. The Molly Brown Bar (or just “The Molly,” as locals call it) has tons of pool tables. Both The Molly and The Haufbrau have live music some nights too.

Bonus: Attend an Event

Downtown Bozeman has so many fun events, at all times of the year! Be on the lookout for anything you might be interested in, whether that’s live music or an art festival. For six weeks every summer, a portion of Main Street closes Thursday evenings for Music on Main, Bozeman’s free concert series.

See if you’re in town for one of the Art Walks, during which artists in Bozeman sell their art in various stores alongside free drinks and refreshments. Or there’s Winter Crazy Days and Summer Crazy Days, during which many of the stores have sales all weekend. Check out Downtown Bozeman’s calendar for the full list of events.
